Section 8 Utility Allowance

A utility allowance is an amount of money that helps cover the cost of utilities. It’s added to the rent assistance provided by the Section 8 program.

Program participants normally pay no more than 30% of monthly adjusted income towards rent and utilities.

The local Housing Authority (HA) looks at your total yearly income and family size to determine whether you qualify for a Housing Choice Voucher. Only U.S. citizens and certain noncitizens with eligible immigration status are eligible.
